Support Staff - The Strength

National Centre for Excellence - Role of Support Staff
  • The role and importance of school support staff cannot be ignored. This group of people plays a very important role in the education system. The school support staff usually take care of pupils, in the classroom and other places in the school. The support staff is needed to keep the school running smoothly.

  • The support staff is the people that students and teachers do not see or hear much about. They are the people that provide a lot of the services that students and teachers need to be successful in the classroom. And they deserve a lot of credit for the work they do.

  • Most schools have support staff who work behind the scenes to provide a lot of what you see happening at school. These people are often not recognized and are not given the same opportunities as other school staff.

  • We often see them being  taken for granted as the people who help us get through the day; the people who keep our children safe and the people who keep our schools running.

    The support staff category

    • These are the people who work at schools who are not directly related to teaching and learning. They might include cleaners, cooks, administration, office staff, ICT, learning and teaching assistants; youth workers, support staff, librarians, school nurses, teaching assistants, curriculum leaders.

    • The school support team will all have a different role, but they all play an important part in the education of our children. They are the unsung heroes, often working behind the scenes, but they are vital to the smooth running of the school.

    • They are often the people you see when you walk into school, but they do so much more than just say hello. An average school will have around 40 to 50 staff members, and each one of them has a vital role to play.

    • The school support staff is the general term for the non-teaching staff who work within a school. In most cases, these support workers play a vital role in the day-to-day running of a school. From janitors to cooks, to administration staff, the work of these school support staff members goes on behind the scenes, making sure that schools run smoothly.

The key players behind the scenes

National Centre for Excellence - Key Players

    • The school support staff are the unsung heroes of any educational institute. They are the ones who go about their jobs without the limelight and without drawing attention to themselves. They are the ones who ensure that the students are safe; that they are guided in the right direction; that they are well fed and well-groomed, and that their academic needs are met.

    • They are the ones who ensure that school projects are carried out; the ones who ensure that a school is a happy place for the students and the teachers. Without these people, the entire educational process would be doomed to failure.

    • These people are found in various roles, from being the school librarian to being the school nurse; from being the school counselor to being the school computer technician. These people are often undervalued and underpaid, and they are often the ones who are not recognized by the school administration, or by the students, or by the parents, or by the teachers.

    • But they are the ones who usually go about their work without any complaints, without any fanfare, and without any expectations; these people are often the ones who are left out of the annual performance evaluation.

The importance of support staff in a child's life

    • A positive support staff can have a huge impact on a student’s career as well as a positive influence on the daily life of a student. They can be a great help for students that need to talk about an issue going on in their life and the support staff can be a great help on the educational side of things as well.

    • Some of the support staff may be viewed as the authority figure in the school, and this may be due to their position within the school, or they may be just viewed as a figure of authority because they are older.

    • The support staff can be a great help to students if they know what issues are going on in the student’s life. Students may feel comfortable sharing with a support staff person that they trust and know that they will not be judged by.

    • Some of the support staff may also be the main person a student sees every day, so they know most of the time what is going on with that student. These support staff members may be a great help to students that have a hard time talking to the teacher about the issue.
